The Institut de technologie agroalimentaire (ITA) is a college-level institution that specializes in agri-food. It is managed by Quebec’s ministry of agriculture, fisheries, and food (le ministère de l’Agriculture, des Pêcheries et de l’Alimentation, or MAPAQ). Each year, the Institute provides training to over 60% of professionals active in the agri-food industry.
Located in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region, an hour and a half drive from Quebec City, the La Pocatière campus welcomes over 300 students. It was created in 1859 as the first French-language agricultural school in the Americas.
The only center in Quebec that give training in organic animal production, the La Pocatière campus offers three streams centered on organic production of animals and vegetables. The campus has teaching facilities for organic methods (80 hectares of certified organic cultivated land, an organic milk production unit, and a vegetable greenhouse currently in the pre-certification phase), as well as conventional facilities. Our associated teaching farm, LAPOKITA, is a key pedagogical tool and a special learning experience that contributes to our students’ entrepreneurial development.
