Program Description
The Professional Music and Song Techniques program aims to train musicians and vocalists capable of developing in various styles of popular music. These styles include mainly twentieth century music and song produced as entertainment for a mass market. This includes genres like rock, jazz, blues, pop, ethnic, folk, world beat, etc.
The program includes two distinct specialization streams. The first, Composition and Arrangement, prepares the student as an arranger and composer of music and songs. The second, Performance, aims to pre¬pare the student as a music or popular song performer.
The staff at Vanier College consists of top professional musicians, from whom each student receives one hour of individual instruction per week on his or her principal instrument.
Opportunities for performance are extensive. Vanier College is noted for its fine performing organizations including the Vanier College Stage Band and the prize-winning Vanier Jazz Ensemble. These organizations have performed in Boston, Toronto and Winnipeg on radio and televi¬sion, as well as concerts in the Montreal area.
In addition, there is a wide variety of chamber music groups. These, together with individual performers, are regularly featured in a series of noon-hour concerts at Vanier.
