Program Grid and weighting

Program grids are made up of all the courses for a specific program. They are usually categorized by semester.

Course structure

Here is an example of the course schedule of a student in the first session:

Weighting system

Every course listed in an academic program (technical and pre-university) includes a weighting made up of three digits separated by a hyphen or space.

The first digit stands for the number of classroom hours per week. In this case, the student will have three hours of formal classroom instruction per week.
The second digit stands for the number of lab hours (in a specialized or multipurpose room) or internship hours per week. The student will thus have one lab hour per week.
The third digit stands for the number of personal work hours the student should put in every week for the course. In this case, that is four hours.

Practical interships

There are different formats of practical internships:

Work-study (in French, alternance travail-études or ATE) is a type of program includes at least two workplace internships. Completed in a full-time work environment, these internships are typically long-duration (8-16 consecutive weeks) at they are always remunerated.
Depending on the program you choose, your curriculum may include mandatory internships. These can take place near the cégep or even overseas, and they are not necessarily remunerated.

Units

Each successful course also gives a number of units. You will sometimes see this information indicated in the program. To obtain a degree, you need a certain number of credits.
