Program Objectives
Professional Theatre / Production is a program designed to prepare talented people for professional employment in theatre, radio, television and film. The program offers a choice of two options: acting and production. All options require a full Secondary V Diploma or mature students status for admission. In addition, candidates for any of the two options must undergo: a) Audition and interview for Acting option (see next page). b) Special interview and testing for the Production option. The successful candidate in the Production option will follow a demanding curriculum. The student achieves a certain degree of skill, comprehension and appreciation of all the design and technical aspects of theatre: the designing of sets, lighting, costumes and props or the proper execution of those designs. Like the actors, students will be given ample opportunity to practice their skills in workshops and full scale productions. A major aim is for the acting and production programs to complement each other as fully as possible. The John Abbott College Professional Theatre program is also the only English professional training program in Canada to offer sound training in the business and technical management of theatres. The whole range of the management areas in the theatre is taught and opportunities to implement the training are amply provided. Each year of the Professional Theatre program is sequential. Each student must pass all given professional theatre courses in his / her year in order to proceed to the next year. Any exceptions made are approved by the Professional Theatre Faculty.
