This program trains students to become professional, classical or contemporary dancers able to deal with the demands of putting on a public performance of new or classic choreographic works in different work environments.
Professional dancers are expected to learn, develop and rehearse a role, make it their own and play this role during public performances. They must meet the physical, technical and artistic requirements of choreographic works. This implies an extremely high level of physical fitness and mastery of their chosen technique.
These dancers work in close collaboration with choreographers, other dancers and coaches under the supervision of an artistic director. They may also be called upon to work with other production partners including management and those in charge of music and costumes.
Expectations vary depending on the size and status of the dance company they work for. Dancers are responsible for managing their own careers and keeping their skills fine-tuned. They must also stay up to date with job market trends at the local, national and international level, with artistic trends, with developments in the area of health care as well as with the training and skill development options available to them. It is their responsibility to take these developments into consideration in their career.
