This program, which consists of two possible avenues, provides the skills and training required to work as a construction estimator or a property appraisal specialist. Certain cégeps offer the possibility of a Double DEC which grants the student both specializations upon completion of the program of study.
Specialization A: Construction Estimating
Building estimators determine the cost of construction projects, including both the development and execution phases. They also prepare estimates for project bids, analyze tender documents and plan the work to be done on a construction site.
Upon completion of the program, graduates will have the skills and knowledge required to: differentiate construction materials; determine preferred construction techniques for given situations; estimate required quantities of material; estimate the time required to carry out projects; estimate labour costs; plan the various stages included in an estimate; finalize bids; plan the various stages required for carrying out a given project and ensure smooth functioning of the work site.
Specialization B: Property Evaluation
Property evaluation technicians interpret plans and specifications, inspect properties, produce evaluation reports as well as create and update assessment rolls. They take on the role of technical assistant for chartered appraisers when establishing a property’s market value.
Upon completion of the program, graduates will have the skills and knowledge required to: write up building inspection reports; calculate the depreciated replacement cost of a building; calculate the depreciation applicable to a building; conduct research at the Registry Office; create sales spreadsheets; apply the comparison method (lot-building) and carry out various analyses.
